BIDMaP's Prof. Omar Yaghi was honored with the prestigious Tang Prize for Sustainable Development in recognition of his pioneering work with Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs). This esteemed accolade celebrates individuals who have contributed substantially to advancing sustainable development, particularly through groundbreaking innovations in science and technology. Each laureate receives a $1.7 million prize, including a $350,000 grant for further research.

Yaghi's research has yielded transformative results, bridging basic science with practical solutions for sustainable living. Collaborations with industry leader BASF have facilitated the large-scale production of these materials. Today, hundreds of laboratories worldwide are harnessing MOFs and COFs to address critical challenges such as clean energy, air purification, and access to safe drinking water. His innovations have also spurred initiatives in major chemical, materials, and automotive industries, alongside over 30 start-ups dedicated to advancing these technologies.
